KORCOS 2026 International Educators Conference | What next? From vision to reality.
Graeme Boyd, Teacher Librarian at Dwight School Seoul, will be presenting From Vision to Reality: The Librarian’s Role in Building a Whole-School Culture of Inquiry utilising The FOSIL Group Inquiry Mindset.
Schools increasingly aspire to develop students who are curious, independent, critical thinkers and confident lifelong learners. Yet in an age of AI, where information can be found, summarised and generated instantly, what does it mean to genuinely inquire? This workshop explores the gap between educational vision and classroom reality, and asks whether we need to rethink the role of the school librarian in helping students move beyond simply finding answers.
Drawing on the FOSIL Group Inquiry Mindset (https://fosil.org.uk) and the work of Darryl Toerien and Barbara Stripling, the workshop explores how inquiry can be deliberately taught, practised and embedded across the curriculum. Participants will consider the transition from information to inquiry and beyond the answer, examining how librarians and teachers can work together to develop questioning, research, source evaluation, critical thinking, synthesis and reflection. Practical examples will demonstrate how the librarian can move from being primarily a provider of resources to becoming a teacher of inquiry and a catalyst for deeper learning.
The session concludes by considering how individual inquiry experiences can develop into a whole-school culture of inquiry. Participants will reflect on what this means for teachers, librarians and school leaders, and identify practical ways to turn the vision of developing engaged and empowered inquirers into reality. The workshop ultimately asks: What could we do differently to make inquiry an integral part of how our students learn?
